Dr. John’s Note on Flavor and Purpose

Our western food culture gives flavor to foods by adding Salt, Oil (Fat), and Sugar. These addicting ingredients raise our blood pressure, damage our heart, and kidneys; and they add considerably to our risk of long-term suffering, obesity, and premature death.

“Is there another way to flavor food?” YES!

Other peoples typically add herbs and spices which liven their foods with extraordinary textures and flavors!                                                                               Our Mexican neighbors use cumin, oregano and cilantro with a liberal dose of Chile to give their food characteristic resonance. Indian Cuisine applies the magical powers of Coriander, Ginger, Cumin, Mustard Seeds, Cinnamon, Turmeric, Cardamom, and Cayenne to weave a spellbinding array of flavors into their food. Moroccans create a tapestry of culinary delight using cinnamon, turmeric, fenugreek, sesame, black pepper, nutmeg and anise. Vietnamese, Italian, Thai, and Indian cuisines have used the over 150 varieties Basil leaf in their foods for over 3000 years!

Each in this variegated group of stimulating herbs and spices bringhas its own panoply of phytochemistry and antioxidants. This decreases our risk of complications from Heart Disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s Dementia, and many Cancers.

“What should I do”?

This is a winning proposition. You can’t lose! When you are next at your Organic Roots or WinCo grocery, stroll over to their bulk foods section and peruse the terrain. Take home a sample of one or two herbs and spices you haven’t experienced yet. Try them in your oil- free soups, casseroles, and dressings. Add less or no sugar and salt to your food over time. Increase dramatically the earth’s natural flavorings in your food.
